Speech Recognition on Mac

Mac has powerful speech recognition software built in, which you might already know about. But What you might not know about is a different kind of speech recognition, which offer to let you issue commands to your Mac — to do things such as start apps or select options within dialog boxes etc. For things like this to work, you’ll need a Mac with a built-in microphone, good news is all modern portable Macs and iMacs have this.

Activating Voice Commands:
  • To activate voice commands, open System Preferences (Apple menu → System Preferences),
  • and click the Accessibility icon. Then click the Speakable Items icon in the list on the left, make sure the Settings tab is selected, and
  • click the On radio button next to the Speakable Items option.
  • A circular floating window will appear at the top right of your desktop,
which lets you know that your Mac is waiting for a voice input. So, all you need to do is hold down the Esc button and speak a command,  and release Esc when you’ve finished. If you want to know what commands you can speak to your Mac. Just hold down the Esc button and say “Open speech commands window.” ,  This will  pop-up a window enlisting of all the commands programmed to be recognized by default.
